Gone are the days of Navajo White and flat finishes on the interior walls of your home. Today we have over 1,700 different colors to choose from in a variety of finishes. There are still flat finishes which are mainly used on ceilings. Then we can choose from low-sheen, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss or gloss finishes. Typically, the lower sheens are made for your walls in the common areas like your living room and bedrooms; while the higher sheens are generally for areas where there will be water (bathrooms, laundry room and kitchen). Also doors and trim moldings are painted with the higher sheens.
With the sheen determined, it’s time to move on to color choices. Just because a color looked good in your friend’s house, doesn’t mean it’s going to work in your home. Things like lighting and the color of your floors and furniture all have to be taken into account when selecting the right color for your home. Mr. D’s can apply several paint color samples to your wall to give a better idea of how colors may blend in a given room.
Okay, you’ve selected a color, and we know what sheen we’re going to use, now it’s time to paint, right? Not quite. Before we begin any project, we prepare the surfaces to be painted, as well as completely mask and cover the areas that will NOT be painted. When the project is finished, we clean-up the job site and remove all materials. We will treat your home with the same respect we do our own.
While a coat of paint will definitely freshen the interior of your home, when it’s time to paint, many of our customers also decide to remove that unsightly acoustic ceiling, or add crown moulding and new baseboards to the walls. It’s most cost effective to do everything at the same time, as in that case the preparation work needs only to be done once. The additional upgrades can make the difference between just a fresh coat of paint and an entirely new look to the interior of your home. Call Mr. D’s today for a free estimate!
Today faux (pronounced: fō) finishing is a popular alternative to wallpaper. Faux is applied directly to the wall surface and, unlike wallpaper, can be covered up with a fresh coat of paint if the faux look is no longer desired. While a entire room can be designed with the faux process, generally (as in the photo), a single faux wall is used as a focal point of the room.
There are two major faux materials/processes used. Glaze work involves using a translucent mixture of paint and glaze applied with a brush, roller, rag, or sponge, and often mimics textures, but it is always smooth to the touch. Plaster work can be done with tinted plasters, or washed over with earth pigments, and is generally applied with a trowel or spatula. The finished result can be either flat to the touch or textured. Mr. D’s professional painters can help you decide on a design that’s just right for your home!
Mr. D’s receives many calls from homeowners wanting to restain their bathroom or kitchen cabinets. However, staining can be costly, when you consider the stripping and preparation work involved in getting the cabinet surfaces ready for restaining. Another option, which is much more cost effective, is simply painting the cabinets. There are hundreds of colors to choose from and so many more options to consider.
This photo shows kitchen cabinets that have been painted and new a countertop installed. The kitchen looks very updated and fresh at a fraction of the cost.
Nothing can add that look of warmth to your home more than richly stained woods. Mr. D’s specializes in all types of wood staining, including cabinets and interior/exterior doors.
In this photo, you see the before and after effect of a beautiful wood banister than has been both painted and stained. Mr. D’s prepared the surfaces by lightly sanding them before applying the paint and stain. It completely changed the look and feel in this home. Call us for a free estimate!
